The State Board for Virginia’s Community Colleges (VCCS) recently approved the implementation of Workplace Violence Prevention and Threat Assessment Policy guidelines for all community colleges.

The Board amended VCCS Policy 3.16.4 to establish guidelines for the development of workplace and general campus violence prevention plans for all colleges and the System Office. It includes the formation of campus Threat Assessment Teams and the promotion and maintenance of a productive environment for learning and working that is free from threats, intimidation and violence. These policy guidelines apply to all students, faculty, staff, visitors, contractors and other third parties at all Thomas Nelson Community College campus and satellite sites.

Thomas Nelson Community College’s  Department of Communications, Humanities and Social Sciences presents “Teachers as Writers, Writers as Teachers,” a faculty colloquium that will provide insights about the creative process and allow attendees to participate in a mini-writing marathon. Free and open to the public, the one-hour presentation begins at 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 9 in the Espada Room, Moore Hall on the Hampton campus.

Assistant Professor of Reading Susan Pongrantz will open the colloquium sharing her thoughts about writing. English Instructor Lisa Ray, a TNCC faculty member since 2000, will discuss her work that was featured on National Public Radio’s StoryCorps . The presentation also includes Computer Arts Department Head Cece Wheeler introducing the concept of digital publishing with her “cinepoetry” which combines images, sounds and music with a text-based poem to create a multimedia work of art.

Thomas Nelson Community College is gearing up for its sixth annual homecoming celebration. Themed “Gator Gras,” the festivities run Feb. 13 – 16.

Kicking off the week-long activities is Green and Gold Day on Feb. 13 and judging for a college-wide door decorating contest. Leading up to homecoming week, departments and groups can decorate their doors Feb. 6-10. For contest entry details, contact the Office of Student Activities at 825-2863.

Poquoson Island Players will present Sam Bobrick’s “Baggage” through Feb. 5 at Thomas Nelson Community College in the Dr. Mary T. Christian Auditorium, Hampton campus. The show is open to the public with Friday and Saturday performances at 8 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. shows on Sundays. Tickets are $15, general admission and $13 for students and senior citizens.

Set in the living room of a New York apartment, “Baggage” centers on Phyllis and Bradley, two difficult, single people, trying to heal from their respective disappointing relationships. Despite a very disagreeable first encounter when their luggage was mixed up at the airport, the two decide to help each other overcome their heartaches by forcing a friendship. They eventually discover that although they may be too difficult for everyone else in the world, they are right for each other.

Thomas Nelson Community College welcomes Virginia State Geologist David Spears to the Hampton campus on Wednesday, Jan. 25 for presentation on Virginia’s offshore economic resources. Sponsored by TNCC’s Geology Department, the 6 p.m. presentation takes place in Diggs Hall, room 100, and is free and open to the public.

“Oceans provide massive benefits to humankind in the form of food, oxygen, and minerals. But the oceans are also becoming an increasingly important source of energy. This talk will focus on the scientific, regulatory, and political factors that govern ocean energy development, using Virginia as an example,” notes TNCC’s Geology Department Head Peter Berquist.

The Thomas Nelson Community College Board recently welcomed community leader Bruce C. Goodson as a new representative for James City County. The Board consists of 14 members from six localities in the College’s service area and acts in an advisory capacity to the State Board for Community Colleges and the TNCC President.

Goodson has served 12 years on the James City County Board of Supervisors and is currently Vice Chairman. He is also President of the Diamond/Goodson Equipment Corporation of Norfolk and Richmond, Virginia and was a charter member of the Greater Peninsula Workforce Development Consortium leading efforts to create the Peninsula Worklink One Stop Career Centers.
