The College will host the Future Business Leaders of America’s (FBLA) Spring Competition on Saturday, March 6 at 9:00 a.m. at the Espada Room, Moore Hall, Hampton campus. The event is a gathering for high school students who are members of the organization at Virginia Peninsula schools. FBLA is a national organization that focuses on several areas of student development including business knowledge and skills; school and community service; leadership and promotion, and financial and social awareness.

William Travis, Historic Triangle Provost and Regional Director of FBLA’s Thomas Nelson region, is seeking volunteers to serve as judges for several competitions. Volunteers are needed to serve as judges and evaluate submissions for the following events:

Homecoming 2010 is rapidly approaching and members of every TNCC office can get in the act to launch the celebration. Beginning today (February 8 ) through Monday, February 15 a door decorating contest is in progress to see which office can best represent this year’s homecoming theme, “Swamp the Cannons.” The theme is a take on TNCC men’s and women’s basketball games against Lord Fairfax Community College during homecoming week which is February 15-21.

Door decorating contest winners will be announced Thursday, February 18 and a trophy will be presented at the basketball game on February 20. To see more details about contest, click here Door Decorating Announcement (pdf)

TNCC and Had to Be Productions, a theatrical group based in California, will present “Into the Fire” at the Dr. Mary T. Christian Auditorium (MTCA), Templin Hall, on the Hampton campus. Performances will take place Tuesday, February 23 at 9:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m.

Free and open to the public, the play explores the stories of disabled veterans who work to adapt to life at home after experiencing combat-related trauma in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Vietnam.

Did you know that one of the likeliest places to be involved in a fender bender is in a parking lot?  Lee Affholter, TNCC’s Safety Officer,  provides several tips to avoid parking lot hazards.

People seem to suspend their good judgment when looking for a parking space. Some people consider the traffic signs such as “Stop” and “Yield” as optional in parking while others ignore the traffic lanes to cut diagonally across the lot. Continue reading »

The College will participate in the Twenty-First National African American Read-In. Set for Monday, February 15 at 3:00 p.m. in the Library Gallery (Hampton Campus), the event is sponsored by the Learning Resources Center and the English Department. This year marks TNCC’s second year taking part.

Students, administrators, faculty and staff are encouraged to bring a copy of a work by a favorite African American author to share in a group discussion. Events coordinators also encourage faculty to consider giving extra credit to students for attendance at the event as an incentive to ensure maximum participation.

Thomas Nelson Community College Chemistry instructor Riham Mahfouz will be among presenters in an innovative show called “A TACT-ful Chemical Musical” on Tuesday, February 9 at 7:00 p.m. at Jefferson Lab’s CEBAF Center Auditorium. Sponsored by Jefferson Lab and the Tidewater Alliance of Chemistry Teachers (TACT), the event is free and open to the public.

Mahfouz, a TNCC faculty member since 2005, joins participating science educators from throughout the TNCC service area for the show which is part of the Jefferson Lab Science Series. She said the show will feature more than 10 “elaborate” chemical demonstrations choreographed and set to popular and/or classical music. Audience participation will also be part of the event.
