Blackboard 9: Supported File Types

What types of files are supported in Blackboard 9?

  • If you plan to use files that need a specific application to view them, it is recommend that you create a link to the software download page for students.
  • There are also certain characters not to use when naming files.
Types of Files (File Extension)

Word (.doc, .docx)
PowerPoint (.ppt, .pptx)
Excel (.xls, .xlsx)
PDF (.pdf)
HTML (.htm, .html)
Text (.txt)
Rich Text Format (.rtf)
Image Files (.gif, .jpg, .png)
Audio Files (.mp3)
QuickTime Video Files (.mov)
Real Audio Files (.rm, .ram)


Characters not to Use

Ampersand ( & )
Comma ( , )
Semicolon ( ; )
Quotes ( ‘ ‘ or ” ” )
Question Mark ( ? )
Number sign ( # )
Slashes ( / or \ )

NOTE: All files uploaded to Blackboard from a Macintosh must have the file extension added.
